Mon 1 Feb
7:31pm 30:56 (4.00mi)
Disastrous run. In so much pain with achilles couldnt wait for run to finish. Limping really badly every step of the way, I wondered if there was some sort of stress fracture the pain was that severe on both the inside and outside of my achilles/ankle. This was really depressing after a 35 mile rest week last week where I only ran quicker than 7:30 per mile once and did no sessions. Yesterdays easy 6 miler was fine so its a baffling one.

Tue 2 Feb
2:33pm 44:47 (6.00mi)
7:16pm 1:01:19 (8.00mi)
A little better today but still limping really badly

Wed 3 Feb
12:40pm 46:11 (6.00mi)
With Andy Nixon. Further improvement

Thu 4 Feb
2:27pm 45:19 (6.00mi)
8:08pm 1:03:07 (8.00mi)
Improved each day this week but still very bad, overtaken by a jogger tonight who drank his water as he 'sped' away from me. These last four days I've been so low.

REST DAY
Saw physio Duncan. Duncan is an ex 2:20 marathoner and is one who keeps me running where possible but on this occasion he said I should stop running for 5 days, and should be replacing my runs with cross training sessions. He said if Im running at almost 8 min/mile and getting overtaken by joggers, it is pointless. I replied that every time the achilles has been bad, it has been after wearing spikes, that we've been here before and I think I can manage the situation, but will move to the cross trainer as a last resort if absolutely necessary. I'm not a fan of the things at all. He agreed but he wants updates every 48 hours!

7:23pm 47:00 (6.00mi). Achilles so much better for yesterdays treatment. About 3mins into the run it started to twinge and there was tightness after the run but so much of an improvement on the rest of the week. A new problem came on though! Shin pain on the same leg. This wasnt that bad. I'm determined to see this week out as planned and that means lining up at Alsager in the morning. Stretched like mad in the evening

Sun 7 Feb
8:22am 24:01 (3.00mi) 10:15am 26:14 warm up (3.25mi), ALSAGER 5 (16th, 24:26, 5.09mi, 4:47/mi), 22:42 warm down (2.71mi).

Some may say I was crazy to line up for this race given the last two weeks but the plan was always to take two weeks at 35 and 50 miles, all easy running with a race at the end of each week. The idea being that this was a rest period with all but the two races done at jogging pace, successfully done by Ron Hill in his prime prior to his marathon build ups. The idea of the races being that they maintained interest and focus, and above all maintained fitness in the way only a race can as 'one race is worth three sessions'. If I couldn't get around today, then the marathon could be a write off as my 11 week build up is quite finely planned and I dont really want to start any later.

The early 2 miles followed the pattern of the cross country last week, felt full of bounce and comfortable. The first 2 miles were probably two quick - 4:35 and 4:39 for a 9:14 two mile garmin split, with the lead seven clear and me positioned in 9th on the shoulder of Martin Williams. Positively, no pain at all, I couldnt believe it, but I stretched like mad before the race. 3rd mile was a slower 4:51 and the positioning stayed the same, at around 3 miles the achilles started to twinge a bit but I was running normally. A fourth mile of 4:52 and the rest period and lack of sessions finally started to tell as things suddenly werent feeling very comfortable! The last mile and a half I was just hanging on (and not doing that great a job of it) but my final time of 24:26 was identical to that of 2004, the year I set my marathon PB 2:18. My entry in the diary that year says I was very fit and felt I had a great run so to match it after a very rough week and at the end of my rest period means I start my marathon training tomorrow in a positive frame of mind, but also very apprehensive and nervous about my injury issues. Interestingly, my 5 mile Garmin split was 23:57 and my final time was 24:26, the distance came out as 5.09 miles which is an unusually high percentage over the advertised distance. It would have been nice to get a PB and have a good result today as it always is but this rest period has been needed and I'd rather be on an upward curve until London rather than flying round again today and then trying to hold my form for another 10 weeks.

Weekly Mileage: 58.05
