Guidelines for the fantasy league

Quick Guide

  • Firstly you need to create an account with eightlane. Registration is free, takes less than a minute (literally) and we don't ask for any sensitive details
  • Log into the member's area and select Fantasy Team
  • Create a team name and then add runners
  • And that's it! Sit back and watch the points accumulate over the weeks, or make tactical edits along the way!

Extended Guide

Okay, so there's more to it than this if you want to get towards the top! The top runners may only choose to race selectively in the UK, if at all, so athletes who run lots of important domestic races may accumulate a higher points score by the end of the season than an athlete who focuses on the Olympics and only runs the UK trials. A list of races with points bonus is shown further below. Some guidelines:

  • An athlete's listed 'event' is only an indication of their dominant event. If an athlete earns points outside of their listed event then the points are added to the total.
  • Similarly if an athlete doubles at an event or championship all points they earn count towards the total.
  • Points are awarded to top eight finishers in descending order (1st = 8 points, 2nd = 7 points, 3rd = 6 points ... 8th = 1 point). If there are gaps in the continuity, such as a foreign athlete or an athlete not listed, then those points are omitted i.e. 8th place always equals one point.
  • You can only earn points for athletes you had in your team prior to an event being staged. If you change an athlete or update an existing athlete all points you earned with that athlete become void, even if you later reinstate them into your team.
  • The cutoff for athletes being eligible for points is midnight on the morning of the event. For multi-day events, the cutoff remains at midnight of the first day.
  • Points are only awarded for the following events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m/Mile, 5000m. If this season goes to plan then more events may be added in future.
  • Each event carries a points multiplier bonus for top eight finishing. More prestigious events, or events that are generally harder to win or require qualification to make the final, carry a higher points bonus. These points are set at the start of the track season and will not change, so you can be sure to plan ahead.
  • The list of athletes at the start of the competition is fixed and is based on rankings, form and wildcards (i.e. Chambers etc). Emerging athletes will not be added midway through the season.
  • If you think an error has been made in the results contact alan@eightlane.com. Please be aware that athletes added after events they have scored in into your team will not be eligible for points.
  • Results are updated as soon as they are available, which may be several days afterwards or as late as Athletics Weekly's publication. If you have a set of results from the races below soon afterwards then please notify us on the forum.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the first and second placed teams who will be contacted on the email their account is registered to. In the event of winning teams being uncontactable or ineligible to win, then the next placed teams will be selected.
  • The prizes are a £70 evoucher and £40 evoucher to be spent at therunningshop.uk.com. These vouchers cannot be exchanged for a cash alternative and expire after a year. Spot prizes will be mailed to winners in the post, and winners will be contacted by email to verify address.
  • No employees of The Running Shop or those associated with the competition design and scoring (Alan Wales) will be eligible for prizes.
